I work in ageing, my current project is in ALS/Motor Neuron Disease and currently there are hundreds of scientists working on this problem, all over the world. . You might have noticed that Bill Gates recently dedicated <a href="http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/306586,bill-gates-pledges-10-billion-to-vaccines-over-decade--summary.html" rel="nofollow">$10 billion</a> (yes, I said ten <strong>billion</strong>, not million) towards vaccines in third world countries. This might make a dent, but not fix the problem. This money also needs to cover costs of manufacture, distribution, and administration. A huge undertaking. . With respect to cancer, it is a bugger of a disease, and there is not just one type of cancer. Each one may require a different kind of therapy. So we have a multi-factorial problem which requires ongoing and continued financial investment. .
